Saturday, January 31, 2004 S-P-E-L-L-B-O-U-N-D Yesterday, met Simon at Nova in Lygon St to see Spellbound. Bought tix, then had a coffee at Tiamo 1, which was actually a tea and a hot chocolate respectivelly, where we saw John Safran recording something... Then Simon and I saw headed over to see Spellbound and it was fantastic. It was a documentary following 8 kids as they made their way to the National Spelling Bee Contest in the US. Really really bizarre flick and the whole time I was watching it, it was as if I was viewing a subsection of US culture that I knew existed, but was nonetheless so strange... What I found most interesting (aside from the wicked and odd words that these kids could spell) was the fact that the 8 kids, and their families, came from such diverse backgrounds but all could, or at least enjoyed to, spell. Affluent, struggling, it didn't matter - these kids could all spell. I also thought it cool that when the 249 kids (how did they get that number?!) reached the final in Washington D.C., the kids were not considered 'geeks' by one another, but belonged and were popular and were just ordinary kids who could spell exceptionally well. Some of the crazy words that were mentioned in the film included: - banns (notice announcing an intended marriage, read out in a church); - logorrhea (see Simon's blog for meaning. I'm sure he knows...) - zwieback (German) - viand (French) - terrene - heleoplankton Was very cool. Then had lunch with Loretta which was really fun. She reminded Simon of all the things he had done on Sunday night when he was really drunk. Was amusing to say the least. Caught train home, bus, saw some Star Trek, proceeded to fall asleep on couch :) before getting another hot choc, this time with Erica at Knox before playing card games with Joel. While there, I received a call from Keri, who is now back in Australia having been in Wales for a good while. She travelled to Vienna, spent a lot of time in hospitals, but other than that had a good time. I know Erica has been enjoying clicking the links to people's photos. I hope others have been too... Oh and just one thing: Zimon, in that post about Lost in Translation - of course Ms Coppola produced a fantastic film with the writing, producing and directing of the film being all done by her. The idea of saying 'who cares about Ms Coppola' to you was to create a little bit of emotional response over MSN so you'd write your thoughts down as a comment on my blog. Sadly, it did not work... posted by AJ | 12:39 PM | |
