Wednesday, January 28, 2004 Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keep swimming, swimming, swimming Busy busy busy... That's why I've been late and running behind... Ahh nuts - who am I kidding. Have just been lazy, not feeling right and not my usual self. Went and grabbed a coffee with Luke yesterday arvo, which was really nice. Didn't talk a whole lot. Didn't need to, which was also really nice. Thanks Luke. It was just what I needed, and while I'm sorry I couldn't really do much more than sit there and answer back in short soundbytes, I really appreciated the effort you made and will not forget it anytime soon. We then put some cool images from the digital camera onto my comp including several from Ang's first 'Fellowship of the Dinner Party' (Jan 18) and my JJJ Hottest 100 BBQ (Jan 25). I hope you enjoy them and enjoy their random and recurring nature over there on the left of this here browser window from which you are currently reading. Last night I saw MUSE play at the Hi-Fi Bar and they were bloody wicked. They rocked out the joint; it was absolutely nuts. A funny thing happened on the way to the theatre... We were lining up to enter the venue and a man approached my brother and asked "what's all this, then?" talking about the huge line - he was wondering what we were all lining up so patiently for. He then quickly added: "are you all going to a sex show or something?" to which my brother promptly said "No" and did not elaborate further. A few minutes later another random approached a chick standing just a little bit in front of us and asked a similar question of her. She said, "we're seeing Muse". The guy looked at her really awkwardly, before looking somewhat baffled and said: "Muse"? That's my name!" It was very funny. I don't think he was chatting her up or anything but just looked generally confused and wanted to speak to her. Maybe my saying your name is an 'angel of creativity' or one who inspires art, he thought it'd lead on to a more interesting and no doubt stimulating conversation. The venue, the Hi-Fi Bar, was great. I had walked past it numerous times in the city before actually being aware of its existence and location. It was very underground if that makes sense. I don't know - I was just very aware that we were underneath the streets of Melbourne-town. The support act, the Morning After Girls were very good - they reminded me a lot of the Dandy Warhols for various reasons. One - when they first walked on stage I mistook all the members of the band for females. Two - one of the band members played tambourine, not unlike that chick in the Dandy Warhols. Three - their music was reasonably poppy with hints of melancholic melodies. The riffs and drum swings were great though; I really enjoyed them. After the support act, the crowd was really keen (keen as mustard, one might even say) for Muse to perform. On numerous occasions, we joined in a ferocious stomping/clapping beat, the one from their album Absolution, to persuade them to entertain us. It was just a great vibe even waiting for them to come onto the stage; you could immediately tell the people were there to see the band perform. They were there to enjoy good music. Ha! MUSE-ic. (bad Muse pun? ) When they did come out on stage, the crowd went nuts, me included. The singer looked very cool and looked kind of gender-neutral - he had that Robert Smith (Cure) and Brian Molko (Placebo) kind of androgyny to him. Was cool. They opened with a rocking version of Hysteria, with a strobing light show that put that episode of the Simpsons where they were in Japan and the kids were reacting to the epileptic cartoon, to shame. In short, they rocked out. Rocked my socks off. You know it's a good concert when someone has to be dragged out from the mosh-pit, which wasn't overly moshy... Admittedly, it was very hot at the gig. Again - something that reminded me we were underground; the lack of ventilation. In short, it was awesome. Very loud and my ears hummed as I tried to sleep afterwards, but it was great. The trip back home was also very fun. As I had gone with my bro's mates, who I actually didn't know very well at all, it was funny just hanging around them, listening to their conversations etc. We stopped in at Nunawading Maccas, where the fun just continued. They were paying out the people in the ads for the new Maccas menu, most notably the Asian man who could either be smiling really hardly or be constipated. They were paying everyone out so well, it was hilarious. They then talked about the time one of their friends was so unimpressed with their burger that they threw it back into the fiery pits from whence it had came. Made me laugh even more. Not to mention the cheeseburger that was so hard that it could've doubled as a toy (a Frisbee) in the Happy Meals... I also heard the term 'ralph' used twice yesterday. Had not heard it before. Means vomit but is much more onomatopoeic. Therefore I appreciate it. Woke up today at a reasonably early hour, had some things to do in the morning, before arranging to meet Erica and Luke at Knox. We lunched, we talked, we shopped, we browsed. Grabbed a coffee and had previously (at lunch) I brought up the fact that I didn't really like drinking coffee because you have to know what you want when you go up to order and I'm not a coffee person among other things. I explained I didn't know my macchiatos from my flat, soy, decaf lattes... So anyway, we got up to order and I thought I have to have a Frappuccino (which is Registered, incidentally) just because I love that scene in Zoolander with the orange-mocha-frappuccinos (or correct variation thereof). I was then astounded at the myriad choices one is faced with, even when you're secure in the knowledge that you want a frappuccino!! Did I want one that was coffee or cream based? Did I want caramel, rhumba? Did I want tall, Grande or Verte (which was TradeMarked, incidentally). There was no small, medium, large. It has been replaced by 'tall, Grande, Verte'. Seinfeld Moment # 45 - Elaine in the candy bar at the movies; small is medium, medium is large, large is jumbo. So in the end, I'm not really sure what happened but I ended up with a cup that had my name on it, an iced coffee drink in my hand, a straw, I gave some money in exchange for said beverage and all was well... Over coffee, (see now I can say that), we discussed some interesting things - of note was the discussion about phones beeping or ringing moments after you think they will. Kind of a technological ESP. Luke explained his version of it, Erica hers and I was just about to say that mine normally happens when I think of the person and then they suddenly appear when Jen approached our circle of coffee ingesting conversation. Was fantastic. Could not have worked better. Spent the remainder of the day attempting to make a Futurama t-shirt with Erica. Spoke to Simon on the phone... DVD capture did not go as planned. Downloading of program took a long time and generally we did not get anything done whatsoever. I did, however, get to play Erica's wicked self-sustaining keyboard. Held those notes from 'Kissing You' really nicely.. In other news, has anyone noticed how everyone is now correctly pronouncing Kim Clijsters surname? Was listening to JJJ today and the news guy said 'Cliiiisters' before correcting himself and saying 'sorry, Kim CLIJSTERS'. I find it interesting. And I wonder why it's happening now. After all, she is Our Aussie Kim... Also, did you see that Bill Murray won a Golden Globe for best performance in a motion picture - comedy or musical ? for his role in Lost in Translation - Comedy or musical? It was neither musical, nor funny. I thought it should've definitely been placed in the Drama section. Please tell me if you found Lost in Translation funny at all.. I did not. This was a gigantic blog entry. Hope you enjoyed. And if this didn't produce any comments, I don't know what will.... Peace out. posted by AJ | 11:02 PM | |
