Great news everyone!
(for me at least!)
I have been doing a HUGE crossword that appeared in the Sunday Herald Sun.... on Sunday (funny that) and I have actually been making progress on it. This is great news because it means I have something to work on during the holidays and also because I'm very close to completing the Cryptic Crossword as well...
Can I just take this opportunity to say that the people that come up with Cryptic Crosswords are GENIUSES!!
Brilliant. Really. They must be. I have such an admiration for anyone that can be that good at (de-)constructing the English language to such a degree as to confuse the hell out of anyone at first glance.... Now I was first introduced to the wacky and wonderful world of Cryptic Crosswords through my friend Eugenie. I went to her house and we worked on one for approximately 8 hours I think it was. Now to most people this sounds like some sado-masochistic joke (or at least self-induced torture) but we thoroughly enjoyed it. She taught me the finer points of figuring out what the clues are REALLY saying and how to use that knowledge to answer the clues.

Here are some examples from the crossword I am oh so very close to completing:

"Most of Italy, I see, is sloping! (6)"
The "is sloping" is referring to the meaning of the word, and the "Most of Italy, I see," its spelling.
Answer: ITALIC (most of Italy = ital; i see = ic).
F*&^ing brilliant.

"How to register a loner" (5)
The "How to register" is referring to the 5 letter word's meaning and the "loner" is an anagram of the 5 letter word.
Answer: ENROL

"A small donkey to an alien is an advantage" (5)
The "A small donkey to an alien" is referring to the syllables of the answer; "is an advantage" its meaning.
Answer: ASSET (a small donkey "ass-" + to an alien "-et" (get it - E.T....) = "asset"!

Awesome.
Incidentally I saw 8 Mile last night for my friend's birthday. We saw it at Knox in the V-Max cinema - Australia's largest conventional indoor cinema screen. The cinema was SOOO big that I was actually speechless when I entered. It was so big that (get this..) it had a MAP!! We were in Row T, which was the very back row, and yeah - it was huge. I really enjoyed the movie and have so much admiration for the "bouters" who could come up with phat rhymes at the drop of a hat. And boy were they funny...

I just googled VMAX and VMAX Village and could not come up with a lot.... I want more info on this cinema screen, dagnabbit.

At zwan.com, 4 studio tracks from Zwan's new album, Mary Star Of The Sea, are available to listen to. Very cool! There is also meant to be a DVD combo, whereby you can buy the album and get a free DVD of the making of the album and the "Honestly" video... I must investigate. Hopefully RAGE will premiere the video tonight. PLEEEEEEEASE
