Wednesday, June 21, 2006 Do you sleep much? I have chosen to continue my public transport posts, as I take public transport every day to get to and from work, and it's by no means a short journey. Last week, I was sitting behind the bus driver when a passenger boarded the bus. A cold, winter's morning, the passenger decided to make small talk with the bus driver. Passenger: It was cold last night wasn't it? Bus Driver: *somewhat dismissively* Yes, it was and it is this morning too. Passenger: Yes, it rained a lot last night. Did you hear it? Bus Driver: No, I was asleep. Passenger: Do you sleep much? Bus Driver: ... *silence, turns and faces Passenger who was seated just behind Driver's left shoulder* It was SUCH an interesting, albeit brief, exchange. I found it fascinating. "Do you sleep much?" What a philosophical, multi-faceted question: - do you sleep many hours in one night? - how often do you sleep, i.e. every night, every second night? - do you do sleep as much as you, say, bowl? (an unusual example, I know. But it highlights the lengths to which you can take this unusual question). You may remember my posts about the lady who rides my bus with me, who I have named the Zort Lady. Recently, in fact probably immediately after my last post about her, I have noticed that there are two men on our bus who laugh, quite loudly, at the Zort Lady's outbursts. Not just laugh, but turn and jest and point toward fellow passengers to check that they, too, are aware of her exclamations. These men disgust me. They are not young. They should know better. I wonder what their children would think. Or their wives. When boarding the bus with the Zort Lady, she often makes odd pronouncements about things that I, quite frankly, may not need to know about. But do I laugh at her? Do I point and taunt and invite others to laugh at her? She, like the rest of the passengers, deserves respect, privacy and manners. None of which these men have in abundance, if at all. Also: There is a lady I have seen a few times on my bus who, whenever speaking to the bus driver, calls him "Driver". I have Capitalised the Noun, in that I am unsure whether the lady thinks that's his name, or uses this salutation as she is uncomfortable with not saying anything at all as a designation... It's interesting. Saturday night was very fun indeed, with Erica, Eug, Dayna, Kel and Bianca. We hung out and saw The Triplets of Belleville and two episodes of Wallace and Gromit. I had never seen Wallace and Gromit before... They're awesome! So cute and funny. The animation and storylines brilliant! Sim mentioned to me that they're playing Chicken Run on Friday in Hong Kong. I told him to definitely watch it if he didn't other plans... how cool!! Following from the night before, where I enjoyed chocolate fondue, my friends thought it such a good idea that they, too, thought "it's called fon-do, not fon-don't" and proceeded to dunk fruit in chocolate like it had never been dunked before... To boldly dunk where no fruit has dunked before...! To boldly use split infinitives like no grammar nerd has ever split an infinitive before...!! One of the many highlights of the evening was recalling 90s music with Erica and Bianca in their kitchen. Thanks for the loan of the Real McCoy (I can't believe they have a Wikipedia page) CD. It's ace! Oh - that song I was thinking of was "Right in the Night" by Jam and Spoon - do you remember it?? Another highlight was stoking the fire, while we were watching DVDs. That was very fun indeed. Today, I met up with Hooch and we had lunch together. It was my lunch break from work, and her a lunch break from study. It was so much fun! Thanks, Hooch!
