There's always room for cake

The ever receptive (and might I add, quick-to-blog!) Erica has made an awesome post about one of hundreds of little conversations we had last night.

In true Sex and the City-style by incorporating friends' anecdotes and generally questioning everything, Erica and I somehow got around to the topic of what '
dating' is. All that was missing from the conversation was Carrie and a close-up of a Mac, scrolling screen, as the audience reads, as Carrie says aloud:
"... so when is a date a date?"

In an evening that was definitely not a date, because as I explained we are different cos we're Erica and AJ. And we're friends. Best friends, I'd say. Which is different.
Sexual orientation and being in a committed, loving relationship may come into play here. You decide.

I honestly do not know how we got onto the topic of it - oh wait, yes I do, I was enquiring, asking, questioning, interrogating Erica how she had gotten on recently in that regard and that's how it came about. This, combined with a cheesy, ravioli napoli and cheesy ravioli pesto led us to the aforementioned topic.

Having then elaborated to Erica that I was told that I went on a date with a friend, Keri, in about Year 10, which I certainly did not think was a date, this caused us to investigate the matter further. (Hi Keri...)

Is it in the questioning, i.e the way someone phrases asking you out? Is it in the location? Is it in who pays? What about if they
go Dutch and pay separately? Surely, these are important considerations that in some way influence the nomenclature of such a delicate social interaction.

In such a Melbourne institution as Pelligrini's, where I kept finding myself looking at Erica "through" the mirror, as opposed to turning my head to look at her directly, it was an appropriate locale to have such a typical Sex and the City (New York) discussion. At least, that's what I thought. It's also probably what led me to say to Erica, in between looking at myself/Erica/the "pasta nazi" "through" the mirror, that I thought places such as Pelligrini's, i.e. ones that hadn't changed in decades, would be prevalent in New York.

"Yeah, I know. People have commented to me that they used to come here 20 or 30 years ago and it hasn't changed at all", Erica said.
The man to Erica's left slurped on his minestrone, then dunked his bread in. He didn't know I was watching. Erica then pulled her chair in to allow two
metrosexuals to walk past.

"Oh, did you see that?"
I was curious what Erica was going to ask about.
"That's purposely dropped stitching [on one of the guy's jumpers]!!!"
"Oh no, I can't say that I did", I said laughing a lot, "maybe you can go up to him and tell him you noticed his purposely dropped stitching", indicating what I was sure would be a unique pick-up line for the fellow.
"Nah, they look too full of themselves for me".

Later, Erica comments "I don't think I like this dating stuff,", pouring a liberal amount of sugar into her coffee, that followed the meal. "It's too confusing. I think that just going to a party and pashing someone is definately the way to go."
I laughed as I moved my chair to let a waiter past.
"Drunken pashing," Erica continued. "Once you've done that you've gotten over all the akwardness, and everything can just move on smoothly from there. Get drunk and just pash someone I say. And once you've already kissed them when you're drunk there's none of that first kiss akwardness."

We stood up from our seats, turned around, and stepped the metre from the bar where we had been eating to the counter to pay for our meals."That's very true" I replied as I took my change from the "Pasta Nazi".

"In fact, that will be my new strategy!" Erica flourished her hands dramatically and we left the tiny restaurant.
"Where to now?"
"Well, we have about an hour to kill. We could find some cake."
"Can you fit cake in?"
"There's always room for cake!"
"That's so true! There IS always room for cake. In fact, THAT will be my new philosophy. There's always room for a little bit more of the good stuff."
"There's always room for cake!"
