Friday, December 09, 2005 The Cure for Cancer....on Connex I had several options for titles for this post... I was contemplating "About a Boy", "Kung-fu Fighting, Dancing Queen", "Cleopatra, Comin' Atcha" or the chosen option. Let me explain... Well, I just finished watching "About a Boy" with Hugh Grant and Toni Collette. I had taped it off the TV several weeks ago and wanted to make the time this evening to watch it. I really enjoyed it and thought it was well-cast with a good plot-line. Toni Collette is a great actress. I had fun playing with my brother's girlfriend's dog, Jaffa. I particularly liked it when he curled up in his little basket, and as I was patting him, he rolled onto his back. I then rubbed his belly until he fell asleep and started to lightly snore. All while I was watching the movie. It was just beautiful. Content. I also really liked taking him outside and watching him eat the cherries that had fallen from a neighbour's tree. Looking out over the treetops and seeing the pink, blue sunset I felt content, warm and relaxed, listening to the quiet sound of Jaffa gnawing on a cherry pip. It was very special. Come to think of it, the post could've rather been called "About a Dog".... My other naming options for this blog come from the music I am currently listening to. I have unarchived one of my CDs entitled MTV's Most Wanted. I believe it must be from about 1997 and has such great hits as Regurgitator's Black Bugs, The Superjesus' Down Again, Radiohead's Paranoid Android (I so almost wrote Paranoid Andrew...), Blur's Song 2, The Verve's Bitter Sweet Symphony, Tonic's If You Could Only See, Cleopatra's Cleopatra's Theme, Jewel's You Were Meant For Me, Arkarna's Eat Me, Third Eye Blind's Semi Charmed Life and Spice Girls' Spice Up Your Life. Classics (in various senses of the word). As I sat down to write this blog, I started to listen to the second disc of this "double CD compilation", which incidentally has a limited edition tattoo inside, so informs the CD case, by way of a white and clear sticker. [Dario G's Sunchyme has just started and I'm bouncing in my seat... Do you know the song I'm talking about? It's a ripper... I'm still bouncing... Hey-oww ma ma ma] The first song on disc 2 was one of the ubiquitous tracks of 1997, Spice Girls' Spice Up Your Life. "Slam it to the left, if you're having a good time..." Ahhhh, good times. I miss the Spice Girls. So we have safely arrived at the destination of the title of the blog. Limited express: The Cure for Cancer... on Connex. I should say that I feel a google whack coming on with the title of this blog. It seems like an odd combination of words to make a sentence... Recently, on the way to and from work I have been reading my brother's Chemistry thesis and checking it for inconsistencies, spelling errors, grammar etc. (ie not chemistry-specific work, as I am not a chemist). You should try it sometime! You get the most interesting looks! While I am busy flicking from Chapter 3 back to the Introduction, to see whether he had inserted a 'the' in each of his captions for his various figures and schemes, I know that fellow passengers are looking at me as if I am some uber-Chem-nerd who is finding the cure for cancer. The first day I looked through by brother's thesis, a middle-aged woman must have noticed the references to several compounds that my brother had looked into that may have anti-tumour properties. Through a sideward glance, I could see her lift her gaze from the page, up to my intent and focused eyes, before giving a sharp nod and returning to her morning newspaper. It made me grin. Today, two women were sitting behind me and I could literally hear their shock, by the way of their silence (which was unexpected, I tell you), as I was fumbling through pages making sure my brother had not used the same words twice in quick succession, or had his paragraphs aligned on the page. Admittedly, as I was sitting on the aisle and required a bit of room to get my pages straight, they may have thought that I was not all there... One woman briefly stopped talking about 'how good Jennifer [Love Hewitt] is in The Ghost Whisperer' and just how many 'cop shows' there are on TV 'including SBS and the ABC now, gawd!' Suffice it to say, I'm enjoying helping my brother immensely. While I have absolutely no idea of the chemistry involved, I do like looking at the pretty pictures and at times have made comments on his thesis along the lines of "I like this scheme the best" as it was one compound that spat out five arrows to produce five different compounds. Next to the arrows, my brother had written the name of the chemist's reaction he had used to perform that procedure. It looked cool. Impressive. Like the Sun with its arms reaching down to the Earth. I have also written things like "this is the longest chemical name I have ever seen", only to see one longer on the next page. I have also circled words such as "moiety", "aqueous quench" and "tetraaza" with notes that say "I'm sure this word is correct...?!" It's fun. I can't decide if I like "moiety" or "aqueous quench" better. How about a quick game of Balderdash? Let's make up some meanings for these baffling words in the COMMENTS section of this blog... I'm looking forward to seeing Harry Potter on the weekend. One more sleep.... :)posted by AJ | 9:43 PM | |
