Sunday, June 27, 2004 Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban BEWARE! This blog contains spoilers - If you do not want to know anything about the 3rd movie installment of Harry Potter, do not read ahead Tonight, Sim, Erica and I went to see Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. I was really excited to be seeing it, as I had introduced Sim to all the characters and the wonderful world of wizardry and witchcraft that lives in the world that is Hogwarts. I've just read Erica's post and her views of the movie and I'm sorry she didn't enjoy the film version of the book, but I absolutely adored it! I thought it was an excellent rendition of JK Rowling's work brought to life on the big screen. That's what it was - an adaptation. And to me it was a mighty good one at that. You see, when you read a book you are drawn into another world. One of your own imagination. I've read before that our imaginations are not able to create nothing 'new' and that we can only recycle tidbits of everything we've ever read, seen or been exposed to and then have to piece it all together to create something in our imagination. We get swept away in the lush tapestry that books provide us with, whisking us off into another world all of our own, a dream-scape of what is written on the page and how our own imagination swirls that into something very special and unique for everyone who reads it. The 3rd Harry Potter movie was one way of realising JK Rowling's vision of the book. I'm sure if everyone who has ever read this book were to make a movie, they would have realised the book dramatically differently. I believe this version however stayed true to many aspects of the original story and admittedly I've only read each book of the series once, but nevertheless I really enjoyed this film. Beautiful landscapes and scenery, teamed with an excellent script and dialogue not to mention a fantastic storyline meant that I revelled in each new scene that was presented to me. There were a few parts I REALLY enjoyed and thought they were excellent representations of the book... Professor Trelawney was played by Emma Thompson and gave the character such an inane annoyness and mysticism that only she deserved. While Professor Remus Lupin looked somewhat different to how I imagined him, his character remained true to the vision that I had of him - a caring, loyal man in the world of Wizarding and Witchcraft. I loved the Marauder's Map and the sneek-peek we got of Hogsmeade... I would've however loved to have seen more Quidditch - I've been told they missed the 2nd game, I would've loved to have seen more Wood (!!), and they missed the House Cup at the end. Also, the 3rd book was considerably larger than the 1st or 2nd, yet this movie was shorter which means there will invariably be key parts of the story that are skipped, shortened or missed altogether, yet enjoyed the film version nevertheless. I think I might read Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban when I've finished my current book - just to compare and contrast the film and book in their entirety. I'm definitely looking forward to the 4th movie - The Goblet of Fire! I can't wait!! posted by AJ | 10:44 PM | |
