Lost In Translation

Have seen a couple of movies over the past 24 hours.
As Erica said, I went to the house where she is housesitting last night to watch The Pianist, a beautiful film directed by Roman Polanski.

Much to my horror, I discovered a gigantic spider lurking behind the edge of the curtain. I think it must have been fate that I discovered it, otherwise we could've continued to watch the video and the huge spider could've jumped onto one of us, tormenting us for years to come.

Suffice it to say, we hightailed it outta there... The spider was actually in attack posture, with his front legs up ready for the pounce. Whenever I went anywhere near it, it would quickly scurry along the wall, waiting for its moment to attack or to do something.

As a result of the incredible amount of fear this spider inspired in me/us, we went to Erica's (to a spider-free environment) to continue watching The Pianist. It was a beautiful film; incredibly sad and brutal.

Today, I saw Lost In Translation. The whole movie was fleeting and a little bit depressing. I left the movie quite different to how I had entered. Bill Murray was very good in it, as was Scarlett Johansson. It made me question the permanence of things - objects, relationships - and how the impermanence is all that matters. Perhaps we're only meant to spend a short time of our life with someone in our life - a friend, a lover - and when that time has expired, that's it. There is no going back. You are forever changed for the experience, but you can never go back.

That movie, along with various scenes of Kill Bill and having been in Japan for only one night, REALLY make me want to go to Japan.

I thought it was such an apt name for the movie; Lost in Translation. It's often the case, isn't it? Not just translating between languages, but experiences, thoughts, emotions.

And the fact that it was raining as I exited the cinema, also seemed to be quite fitting.
