Thursday, January 29, 2004 Everyone Deserves Music Everyone deserves music, sweet music. Everyone deserves music, sweet music. Even our worst enemies Lord, deserve music, music. Even the quiet ones in our family, they deserve music. Anyway, what have I been up to today...? erm, had a gigantic sleep in, did some jobs, read some more of The Orchid Thief, saw an episode of Star Trek DS9 before jumping on here. Am currently listening to Michael Franti and Spearhead. Have been replying to emails, which should have been replied to weeks ago... Getting back on track. The Star Trek episode I saw was excellent. It was called Second Sight. One of the guest characters was a 'psycho-projective telepath' and her unconscious mind created a character, who the woman herself could not be in her ordinary, everyday life. The created character was more outgoing, wore more revealing attire. In short, she created the person she wanted to be. I found the episode really interesting, because while we only saw the 'true' and 'real' character several times, there was nothing really stopping her from acting like the created character, with the more outgoing personality, in her normal, everyday life. The created character eventually had to stop existing, as it was killing the real character. Afterward the real woman had no recollection of the created character and asked what the she was like. Sisko answered 'she was just like you'. And she was. She was the character she could be, who she wanted to be. Not even if things were different. I just found it fascinating. I know myself, I always think people, (myself included) are such multi-faceted people with many faces and many personalities. So I ask you this: are you the character you want to be? Probably going to see Will play in his jazz band tonight. In Bentleigh. I don't know where that is... Am looking forward to it nonetheless. And then seeing Spellbound with Zimon tomorrow morning in city. Haven't seen him in ages... what since Rutti's dinner? would that be right? Think I should try and get started on critiquing Erica's Broadway Fever musical. Have been meaning to do it for some time.. What - we saw that last week. My how time flies. Here goes (items that included Erica and/or her sis Bianca are bolded). If I forget what any of the songs are, I'll have to fill this in later...: ACT 1 Louder than Words I remember I mistook one of the girls in the ensemble for Erica at the start. This was a good song, the guy had am excellent voice. Was not a show stopping number, unlike... Stayin' Alive This was hilarious. The dude who had the main role was dancing up a storm. Loved the outfits and the crazy 70s dancing. I think this was the one where Erica had a cool white tinsel wig on... right? Highway of Love Ahh, I just remembered this one. Very very funny. Probably the best piece of casting. This guy who looked about 40 (but was actually 21) was cast as the Dad and did such a good job. It had a family of four and they were in a "car" made from well-positioned chairs. It was very funny. A lot of laughs from the audience in this one. Someone to Watch Over Me This was cool. Two girls were singing. Excellent voices. Great harmonies at the end of the song. They were awesome singers. Nice and minimalist. What the song deserved. I Got Rhythm Much more uptempo. Was this the one with the manchild? I always forget... If I remember people were tap dancing in a semi-circle around the guy and girl. Very cool. Some cool swing dancing... Nice Work if you can Get It Ahh, this guy had a really funny, smooooooth voice. I actually laughed out loud when he first sang cos it was so put on. Good though. Filled with sexual connotations. Three girls kept leading him on, only to sort of push him away, before leading him on again. Was funny. Biggest Blame Fool I 'think' this was the one from Seussical the Musical. It involved an elephant who thought he saw someone on a speck, is that right? I'm not sure I understand still. Lots of people just kept appearing out of nowhere. They were all the animals of the jungle right? Alone in the Universe This was awesome, probably my fav song from the production. It had only 4 people on stage, and they were all sitting next to lamps that shone when they sang. was very cool. very spare. I woke up the next morning with this song in my head. Erica - what musical was this from? cos it was cool. Welcome to the Sixties Ahh, this was good too. They cast a guy, who looked very unsure, as the fidgety, stuck in his/her ways mother. His/her daughter was singing to her Mum about getting into the sixties, with the Mum gradually joining in the cool 60s dances. Erica wore a large mustard coloured tent for this item. Like Nicola, I thought she was wearing it as later in the piece she was going to rip it off to reveal a skimpier outfit underneath. Mama I'm a Big Girl Now Invoved about 10 girls in pyjamas, who were having pillow fights. That's all I remember about it. Waiting for Life Was this the one with the 3 girls and the picnic basket and red tablecloth? I liked this song. Flying Home This was really good. Good closer. Everyone was in white. It was very angelic. The light guy also used this cool technique where the light seemed to wash over the audience, before hitting the stage. I don't know - felt like they were really getting the audience to 'connect' with the performers in this one. Mainly cos of the lighting. If I remember right, this was the same guy as the opening number. He had a really great voice. He had to sing "arms" really really high and did it effortlessly. The chick who sang after him was also very good. There were some awesome performers. ACT 2 Flim Flom This was very funny. Flim Flom is, allegedly, a place. It was about a chick who was trying to get to Flim Flop. The bus full of people was clever. Even when everyone rotated, to indicate they were turning. Was cool. Chill Baby This was really really funny. The dancing was really odd. People looked like robots in some bits with their arms folding into their bodies, before extending outwards in fast succession. The people to the right of me in the audience must've been friends of the girl who had the lead in this one. They were going nuts. All the Wasted Time I think this was the song with the period outfits. I think that guy had the best voice of the whole show. Looked like they had stepped out of of late 19th century London Telephone Hour This had a lot of people making phones out of their hands. I discovered that 'getting pinned' is a 50s term for 'going steady', which incidentally is another term for 'going out'. Lot of Living This was the one with the group of guys on one side of the stage and the main guy had a leather jacket? One of the guys behind me, the same one who had previously stated to the person he was there with that he thought the musical was a 'good mix of contemporary and old musical numbers' shouted out 'yeah' when that guy in the leather jacket started to sing. Must be from a galaxy that is big for Musical Theatre. :) Nowadays This one had Bianca dancing and singing up a storm. Is from Chicago. Was very very cool. I thought Bianca was the best of the 4 of so on stage in that one. Maybe This Time Cabaret. Joel Grumont's favourite. ;) Not. Had studied this in Year 12, so knew all the words. Very cool. Razzle Dazzle I think this was the one where Erica and Bianca acted like they had rusty hinges in their arms. I can't remember why they did that. It also involved a man sliding along the ground on his back to deliver a well-timed cane to the lead singer. Belles of St Sebastian They sang Latin in this one! Kyrie Eleison! Every Year the Leaves Fall Probably my second fav song of the production. Just one girl sitting on some steps with a cool light show playing behind her on the background to show autumny colours. Light of the World Erica's solo! (I think...) There were so many songs to remember. I think I've done extraordinarily well... Yeah, Erica rocked. It was cool how everyone on stage looked to her as she sang. something about the 'salt of the earth', no? I Wanna Fly I can't remember this one, sorry. Erica - help? You Can't Stop the Beat Encore. Encore. Good song to end it on. Was much more poppier than the previous number, even though at this point in time I cannot remember the previous song... Well there you go. There's my biased and completely unexpert opinion. I hope you enjoyed it.posted by AJ | 5:01 PM | |
