Wednesday, April 09, 2003 Across The Night Hello all. Had a busy past few days. Well not really, but it sounds impressive, right? On Tuesday night, as we are all already aware, the silverchair concert was held at vodafone arena. (Please note the non-capitalisation of both silverchair and vodafone... very modern, eh?) Wow. It was a great concert. Quite a spectacle. At one point, Daniel Johns even said something along the lines of "screw intimacy, gimme more arena rock!" WOOHOO. This was, of course, because vodafone arena was the largest venue to which they had played so far on their Across The Night tour. From the info I've seen on the net so far, tracklisting was (perhaps not in correct order, close though): 1st Act: After All These Years World Upon Your Shoulders Tuna In The Brine Luv Your Life Petrol & Chlorine Paint Pastel Princess Miss You Love Across The Night Ana's Song Steam Will Rise 2nd Act: Emotion Sickness Slave Anthem For The Year 2000 The Greatest View Freak Without You Black Tangled Heart Do You Feel the Same? The Door One Way Mule Encore: Asylum The Lever Highlights for me included: After All These Years. Daniel playing beautifully on piano. Great song, really great. "World Upon Your Shoulders". The stage was set-up with three large plasma screens behind the band (which were framed with very Diorama-esque golden ...errr.....frames). The images that were projected during that song were of the moon, and then a "big and violent" world..., like something that's "big and violent". It reminded me of the ENTERPRISE opening theme, only much better. And rock music to accompany the images, not a song written by Diane Warren, who somehow writes EVERY song that will ever appear on TV or movies. "Luv Your Life". The "do do do do do do" chorus was extremely popular with the crowd. I especially liked the syncopated rhythms in this part. It was slightly different to the album version, methinks. Really cool. Not to mention the bright pop-art squares flashing on and off on the large plasma screens. A really bright version of the song. Anthem For The Year 2000. VERY COOL! Great, perhaps the BEST usage of the screens all night. On each screen, they showed various images of George W. Bush, Tony Blair, John Howard, journalists, the price of petrol, closeups of Kuwait/Iraq, Condeelza Rice et al. My favourite was the spliced images of Bush (flashing up with "When I say 'Jump'") and Howard (flashing up with "I say 'How high?'") Very cool. And the pictures often distorted into red, making the feeling that much more intense and grusome. It was very cool. There was also a cool morph of George Bush Snr into George W Bush. Freak. I had said to my bro just previously to this song coming on, that I really hoped they played Freak. And they did! WOOHOO! Sang the obligatory "Yeah, I'm a freak of nature; Yeah, I'm a freak; If only I could be as cool as you; As cool as you; Body and soul, I'm a freak" changing the pronouns really randomly which was really fun. Went a little something like this: "Yeah, *you're* (pointing to my bro quite frequently) a freak of nature; Yeah, *she's* a freak; If only *you* could be as cool as *me*; As cool as *me*; Body and soul, *you're* a freak" And Daniel's falsetto singing and animal roars were impressive to say the least. Asylum. We only have Diorama and Neon Ballroom, and I'm not sure where this song was from. Oh... chairpage.com doesn't seem to help me..... Perhaps it's a new song that they're just playing live? Very nice. Daniel on the piano with random band member backing him up on the harpsichord. When Daniel was particularly feeling the groove, he turned and faced the band and did a funky little dance, much to the dlight of the crowd. He really did know how to .... "shake that booty". At random times, Daniel also strummed his electric guitar with his teeth! Ouch? He also humped the amps on several occassions which was very funny. During Across The Night or was it Luv Your Life, Daniel ditched the guitar and grabbed the mic with both hands, Bernard Fanning style. Very rock. At the end of the second set, he also took off his shirt. The drummer, had already stripped down to boxers at that stage (he came out att he start of Act 2, with only boxers). Overall, I think silverchair played for over 2 hours, perhaps 2 and a half....! Very impressive! Unfortunately, I wasn't all that impressed by the support act, The Sleepy Jacksons. across the night it was the moon that stole my slumberposted by AJ | 9:56 AM | |
